Summary

18 × 10.75 ft wall decal featuring all 51 undergraduate majors in the College of Arts & Science, interlocked into a word cloud. Designed for new student space on 726 Broadway.

Challenge

With the College of Arts & Science temporarily relocating during renovations, the school sought to affordably transform the large Lewent Lounge at 726 Broadway into an inviting student space. Since this was an interim space, any installations needed to be cost-effective yet impactful — allowing for potential reuse at CAS’s eventual home on 25 West 4th Street. 

Goals

Enliven a temporary student space

Highlight the diverse range of majors at CAS, instilling a sense of pride across disciplines

Process

Layout
Using a mix of font styles and weights, I created layout options that would convey different tones. CAS opted for the higher energy word cloud, bursting from the center outward.
Color
We explored a variety of palettes, from monochrome purple/lavender to various accents — ending on the most colorful and vibrant of the options.
Mockup
Finally, I measured other wall elements to ensure the best placement for the word cloud.

Impact

We have used this wall as the backdrop for our Senior Baccalaureate photoshoot for the last two years. Students love having such a colorful backdrop to stand in front of in their academic attire while they snap a photo to be shown on the great stage of Radio City. It adds so much vibrancy to the room.
